Miranda Levy wrote an exceptionally sensitive article about my family (“I’d be happy for my daughter, who has Down’s syndrome, to have cosmetic surgery”). Unfortunately, I didn’t feel the headline and cover line, wrongly attributed to me, reflected the emotions described within the article. I have always thought that Ophelia is beautiful, but what I did not appreciate until several months after her birth was my own ignorance about Down’s syndrome, and the ignorance of many other parents of Down’s children. Nonetheless, I would like to say thank you for printing this article. Since it was published, we have had some beautiful entries in Ophelia’s web-based guest book (www.opheliablueeyes.com), and my next goal is to help fund new research like that being carried out by Professor William Mobley of the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital’s Down Syndrome Center in Palo Alto, California, who is currently looking at drugs which may help children like Ophelia to think better.
